Satisfied to sit in the hole she’d dug in the snow-white beach sand, my daughter played for hours while the others jumped waves and dove deep into the crystal blue waters. Every now and then, with her yellow pail in hand, she’d walk to the ocean’s edge. Cautiously bending her small framed body and holding tightly to that yellow pail, the two of them would meet the waves as they rolled in. Once her pail was full of salty, cool water she’d make her way back to her hand-made beach playground. She’d then tilt her pail upside down turning that sandy hole into a shallow puddle of ocean water.
Fear of what swam in the depths of the ocean, not knowing how to swim or stay afloat, happy with a few brief moments of standing ankle deep in the crystal blue waters, and contentment to stay in the puddle she’d created for herself caused my daughter to miss out on the entire experience of a day at the beach.
Friend, our life with Jesus is an experience; an experience meant to be lived immersed deeply in the pages of His life-changing Word. But, far too often we find ourselves afraid of His Word because we don’t know how to dive into its Truths. We find ourselves tiptoeing around, filling up our “life pails” with a good Christian book, TV evangelist, Bible Study teacher, Wednesday night prayer meeting, or monthly service in our church. We empty our life pails into the hole we’ve made for ourselves and settle into puddle living. Because it’s safe, and it’s easy, and it doesn’t require much.
But God calls us out of darkness into His glorious light to live abundantly, not settle. He calls us to a life of holiness, not mediocrity. He calls us to Himself so that we can experience firsthand a beautiful relationship with Him. God calls us to dive deeper, to reach further, to press harder into intimacy with Him. He’s written for us a love letter, a guide; a user’s manual that clearly lays out this abundant living, this life of holiness, this magnificent union of holy God to His human creation.
His Word. Living and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword. Revives the dead. Heals the wounded. Binds the broken-hearted. Restores the lost. Redeems the sinners. Transforms the wayward. Grants hope to the hopeless. His Word breathes life. Rains grace. Gifts mercy. Penned by His chosen, His love on paper is given so that you and I might study, might learn, might experience, might connect to the heart of our great God.
We must take this guide and dive deeper into its pages, its stories, its God-breathed life. We must study, dissect, and devour this daily bread until it becomes the sustenance of our being.
But how? How does God’s Word become the very breath we breathe? Our life? Our all? Our daily bread? How do we read this Guide and study its content? How do we take it apart piece by piece, section by section? How do we dive deeper into this love gift and live abundantly in Him?
